THAT didn’t go as planned!
This was supposed to be the culmination of my first 40 mile week, but two things got in the way.
First, I didn’t start my run on time, and I had a date this afternoon, so instead of going out for my 14 mile loop, I went out about 4 miles, then turned around and came home. A little over 8 miles, and that was it.
Next, I didn’t pay attention. That 14 miles or bust thing at the top of the page? That’s wrong, too. I was actually supposed to run 16 miles today… so no, we did NOT hit 40 miles this week! Instead, I managed 32.38 miles. Oops.
Still, I had a pretty good month, logging a total of 143.08 miles. This is a new personal record for me.
The real problem is with my training schedule, which assumes a long Sunday every other weekend. I was supposed to do 16 today, and two weeks from now, do 18… then 20… you get the point. To get back on track, I will either need to grab 16 next weekend, and pound out 18 the next weekend with no “off” week in between, or I will have to try to bag 18 miles without the stepping stone of a 16 mile run before it. For now, I’m planning on the previous; I really need to get that long run in as I haven’t gone much further than 8 miles in the last three weeks.
So to keep things from going crazy, I’m going to modify my training plan a little. Knock back next week’s goal a little… shoot for 37 miles instead of 40, but with the 16 miler on Sunday. Then the week after, which was supposed to be a 43 mile week, I will probably drop down to 40. I’m not quite where I want to be, and I hate to take miles off my training with Pittsburgh still 91 days away, but I don’t think pushing too far without the right base is going to help me in the long run.
And so, the rally cry next weekend? 16 miles or bust! I hope it doesn’t snow on Sunday!
