The first half marathon I signed up for is the Hampton Rockfest. On their site, they mentioned that there would be a gel stop, and they’re serving vanilla flavored Hammer brand runner’s gel. Runner’s gel has a consistency somewhere between tooth paste and apple sauce. Tear off the top and squeeze the packet to ingest. At 90 calories and 21 grams of carbs, this is pure energy in a tiny little pouch. It’s less than two tablespoons in volume, and has electrolytes to help replenish what you’re losing as you sweat. It’s vegan, if that is important to you. If you’re going to use gels while you run, I highly recommend making sure you have some water to wash it down. I take one with me for all my 10+ mile work-outs.
